I want to get a finish deck & a post-hole digger for the Yanmar but looking around and talking to dealers makes me think that they'll be glad to take our money (ka-ching) but the price that they charge me is not the same as they'll charge Farmer Brown down the street. So how do I know that I'm truely getting my $'s worth? What makes this brand XY deck better than brand NM? Or post hole digger or rake or what-have-you.

Like anything else it is mostly a quality issue. For homeowner landscaping, it often doen't make sense to get implements at the upper end. It isn't hard to put a Landpride tool next to a KingKutter tool, and see the difference in quality. Yet I have several KingKuttter implements and have beat the you-know-what out of them, and have never had a problem.
You need to look at the quality, and you don't need to look very closely to see the difference. For a chunk of iron like a box blade, you can probably get away with something on the lower end. When you get into decks and post hole diggers, you may want to step up. The gearboxes, bearings, and alignment of the moving parts starts to make a difference.
Weight it probably the most important consideration for 3pt grading implements. Take a good look at a high end implement, and compare it to the lower end. If you have good mass, and can live with the fabrication quality, for residential use, you can stay low end. If it needs to rotate, and safety becaomes an issue, get the good stuff.
There are enough dealers and manufacturers around that comparison shopping is pretty easy. The internet makes it quick. You'll be able to fugure out if you are getting hosed. ....
